Spiney Softshell Turtle

From Little Rock District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers:

Spiney Softshell Turtles are currently laying eggs on the swim beach at Shoal Bay Park on lake Dardanelle. This large, aquatic turtle can reach 14 inches long. Females are much larger than males. The name comes from the soft, leathery shell that feels like sandpaper and is yellowish brown or olive-gray. Its head is long and slender with a very pointed beak.
