Spadefoot

After this wiggling spadefoot reaches maturity it will escape the desert heat by digging underground with hard shovel-like appendages. Most of the spadefoot's life is spent below-surface until the pattering of rain coaxes it upwards to mate and lay eggs. (ls, photo by Christian Wright)
