From Great Smoky Mountains National Park:
The flame azaleas on Gregory Bald are in full bloom this week. In most of the park, flame azaleas are bright orange in color, but on Gregory Bald, they bloom in a range of colors from white, pale pink, and yellow, to scarlet and orange. The plant gets its name from the color and shape of its unopened bud, which looks like the flame of a candle.
The shortest route to Gregory Bald is a strenuous hike of about 10 miles round trip. Both the Gregory Bald Trail and the Gregory Ridge Trail head up to the bald, and can be accessed via the Forge Creek/Parson Branch roads in Cades Cove.
