Horned Lizard

From USFWS National Wildlife Refuge System:

Nice defense! To defend against predators, short-horned lizards puff themselves up into spiny balloons twice their normal size. If this doesn’t work, the lizards shoot blood from their eyes. The blood contains a chemical noxious to dogs, wolves and coyotes. Find the lizards at Ash Meadows Refuge (http://1.usa.gov/1pnh68v) and elsewhere in SW. Photo: Gary Stolz, USFWS
