From Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex:
Yellow-crowned night-heron, Nyctanassa violacea, feed mostly on crustaceans, especially small crabs. These two were feeding in shallow waters on an exposed seagrass flat in National Key Deer Refuge a few days ago. Does anyone know why they might have their feather ruffled up? Maybe a territorial thing, or possibly to dry off from the morning rainfall? Has anyone observed this before?
