The Distinctive Pileated Woodpecker

From Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge:

Pileated woodpeckers are the largest woodpecker in North America and are known for the large, rectangular holes they leave behind in the dead trees they scavenge from. Their preferred source of food is carpenter ants. In winter, when the leaves have fallen from the trees, their bright red caps make them easy to spot in the forest.
