The men of the Corps of Discovery spotted at least two different species of foxes during their journey.
The Swift Fox (Vulpes velox) is the smallest wild dog in North America. Its fur is light gray with orange-tan coloring on the sides and legs. Its throat, chest and undersides are creamy white and the tail is bushy with a black tip. They only grow to be about 12 inches tall, 20 inches long (not including the tail) and weigh between four and six pounds.
The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes), like this cheery guy, is the largest of the true foxes, and is rusty red with white underparts, chin and throat. Reds have long bushy tails with white tips. They'll grow to be approximately 5 to 30 pounds in weight, 14 to 20 inches tall, and anywhere from 18 to 35 inches in length (not including tail). Red Foxes have been observed running as fast as 45 miles per hour over short distances.
