From U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters:
Not everything that floats is a duck!
American Coots were in abundance at #USACE St. Louis District Carlyle Lake's Saddle Dam II over the weekend. The coot, also known as the mud hen is commonly mistaken to be a duck, but at a closer look their small head and scrawny legs make them a closer relative of the sandhill crane or the nearly invisible rails than a mallard or teal. This photograph was taken by Dan Kassebaum.
