Varied Thrush

From Mount Rainier National Park:

Of the Varied Thrush (Ixoreus naevius), Sibley says, "Song a single long, clear or buzzy whistle on one pitch." If you have ever heard this whistler in the forest, you'll know exactly what he means. At first glance, one might mistake this Thrush for a robin. It is of a similar size, and the rusty-red breast will be the first thing an observer notices. The male of the species wears a distinctive black band across the breast, but the female (shown here) lacks that marking. Look for the stripe above the eye and the bold orange markings on the wing. ~cv
