Now there is a world map of the forest.  Researchers have reconstructed from satellite data the global forest cover of the year 1990.  Until now, data from individual countries had to be pieced together, which caused problems because the different countries had different standards and definitions.  Based on the new map of the world, the development of the forest over time can be observed.
