Black Bears

Even though it's late October, black bears are still out at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Take a tour around the Murphy Peterson Wildlife Drive and you might just see one...or more! http://1.usa.gov/1t9DZ1p

The refuge is home to the largest population of black bears in eastern North Carolina and one of the largest in the eastern United States. In addition to black bears, visitors routinely see waterfowl (in large numbers during the winter months), birds of prey, and assortment of reptiles, wading birds, songbirds and lots of other types of wildlife.

The Wildlife Drive is also open for bicycles, but we recommend mountain bikes, due to the coarse gravel surface of the roads. And there are several hiking and paddling trails. Don't forget to stop by the new Visitor Center on Roanoke Island: http://1.usa.gov/1rxoWdn. Explore!
