ATLANTA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 announced today that Andrew Day from Fort Valley, GA was selected as the 2011 President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) recipient. Andrew will be presented the PEYA award by EPA Regional Administrator Gwen Keyes Fleming, at the “Downtown Atlanta Cleanup Challenge Celebration” at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 11:00 am EST.
Mr. Day’s award winning project focused on
the formation of a Youth-Run Environmental Club, called Choosing to Lead
Environmental Action Now (C.L.E.A.N.). Mr. Day initiated this club as a way to
help the community of Hawkinsville, GA and inspire and encourage others to do
the same. The primary goals of the C.L.E.A.N. Club are tagging storm drains in
the community, educating the community, and having a youth-led and run club that
promotes environmentalism and positive impact for the community. Club
activities also allow Mr. Day to present current environmental issues to his
peers, organize educational presentations and trips, and arrange community
service projects to clean up the environment.
