Gulf Sturgeon

May 6, 2016

From USFWS Southeast Region:

Motherhood is hard work! This Mother's Day give your mom a hug, but also spare a thought for the Gulf sturgeon.

A female Gulf sturgeon will migrate upriver from the Gulf of Mexico in the spring, sometimes swimming more than 100 miles. She then lays from 200,000 to 500,000 eggs. In order to save energy for spawning, the Gulf sturgeon doesn't expend any to find food for herself. That means she doesn't eat -- for six to eight months! -- until she returns to the Gulf in the fall. (Photo: USFWS)
