Romantic Sea Ice

From Selawik National Wildlife Refuge:

As we approach Valentine’s Day, we’re highlighting the love life (or, as biologists would say, mating behaviors) of some local wildlife species. While the sea ice might not seem a romantic destination for you, it’s totally essential to the love life of the bearded seal. These large seals, called ugruk in our region, mate on the ice, give birth on the ice, and nurse their young pups there as well. Declining sea ice is the main reason they were listed as a “threatened” species.
