From U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Mountain-Prairie Region:
“When land does well for its owner, and the owner does well by his land; when both end up better by reason of their partnership, we have conservation.” -Aldo Leopold, The Farmer as a Conservationist
America's Prairie Pothole Region is arguably the most important wetland and grassland region in the world. This unique ecosystem is commonly referred to as America’s “duck factory” because it is the most productive area for nesting waterfowl on the continent.
But this landscape is rapidly changing as grassland and wetland losses continue to mount.
In response, we are striving to create a dynamic in which agricultural and community interests on the prairies work together with conservation interests to maintain working farms and ranches that are profitable, but that also conserve prairie wetlands and grasslands and the benefits they provide to both society and wildlife.
