WEDNESDAY: EPA Will Hold Public Meeting to Discuss Final Results of Radiological Investigation at Santa Susana
Agency Officially Completes Work at Superfund Site
LOS ANGELES—On Wednesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a community meeting to discuss the final results of its radiological investigation at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL). EPA has officially completed its field work and has collected a total of 3,735 soil and sediment samples and 215 groundwater and surface water samples which were analyzed for radioactive contaminates. A final report will be completed by the end of December 2012. In addition to sharing the results of this investigation, EPA will discuss the transition of documents and final data to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, the lead agency on the site, for the next phase of the investigation and cleanup.
In 2009, EPA received $41.5 million to conduct one of the most comprehensive technical investigations ever conducted for low-level radioactive contamination. EPA’s role was to provide technical assistance to DTSC and the Department of Energy by conducting field work to assess radiological contamination at Area IV and the Northern Buffer Zone, a 470 acre area at SSFL which borders Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.
