California Kingsnake

From Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area:

If you see this snake while you're out hiking, don't panic! This non-venomous species is naturally resistant to the venom of rattlesnakes (but is not totally immune). Commonly called a California kingsnake, they feed on rattlesnakes when given the chance, but do not seek them out specifically. Nonetheless, the kingsnake is a player in managing rattlesnake populations. - Ranger Zach#nationalserpentday #serpentday
