Adaptations of the Lake Sturgeon

From Midwest Fisheries Center:

In this picture our lake sturgeon is doing a nice job of showing off it's specialized adaptations for life on the bottom of a river. Notice it's flat shovel shaped nose, taste sensing barbels, downward facing mouth, flat belly, and protective bony plates (scutes). This body plan has gone relatively unchanged in the sturgeon family for the past 200 million years and there is no sign of it changing. Nature doesn't mess with success!
