Bird of the Week: Northern Pintail
Northern Pintail are medium sized dabbling ducks which feed primarily on grains, seeds and aquatic invertebrates. Drakes are very distinct with a bright white throat patch that runs up either side of a dark brown neck and a long "pin" like tail for which they are named. As with many species the hen is very mottled with varying colors of brown that allow her to blend into her surroundings while on her nest. Pintails tend to early nesters, starting as soon as the ice melts in the spring.
