False Map Turtles

From the USFWS National Wildlife Refuge System:

"What do you mean, you're lost!!! Aren't you a map turtle?!! I never heard of such a thing!"
Thank you for our winning caption Susan Freeman.

False Map Turtles are typically found in large rivers and backwater areas, spending their days basking on logs and foraging for mollusks, insects, carrion, and bits of vegetation. A web pattern sometimes found on the shell and often resembling a map gives the turtle its name. These turtles are endemic to North America and prefer slow currents where they can bask and commune with other turtles. These were photographed by Veronica Kelly at DeSoto National Wildlife Refugewww.fws.gov/refuge/desoto/ in Iowa.
