Wastewater release occurs at Dan River Steam Station

Immediate corrective action stops flow

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
A brief discharge of water occurred Wednesday at the Dan River Steam Station site in Eden, NC when an excavator hit a pipe used to convey collected stormwater and wastewater, releasing approximately 1,000 gallons. A portion of the release was discharged into the Dan River. The discharge did not contain coal ash or any coal residuals.

Site personnel took immediate corrective action to stop the flow and have taken measures to prevent any future discharge. Appropriate notifications to the state have been made. This unpermitted release did not pose any health or environmental concern in the river.

The excavator was performing permitted work at the site of a new boat ramp being constructed to facilitate ongoing environmental monitoring and river clean-up activities related to the February 2 coal ash release.

The discharge occurred on March 19, 2014 at approximately 11:15 a.m.
