***NEWS BRIEF***

U.S. EPA issues permits requiring upgrades to Northern District and Agana sewage treatment plants

HONOLULU – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced it has reissued Clean Water Act permits to the Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) for the Northern District and Agana Sewage Treatment plants. The permits require both plants to upgrade to full secondary treatment and establish wastewater quality levels consistent with secondary treatment requirements.

As part of this issuance, GWA will need to ensure effluent limitations designed to protect Guam’s beaches are met, and that controls are implemented to reduce sewage spills from fats, oils, and grease. EPA is engaged in discussions with GWA regarding its plans to comply with the new permits.

The final permits, issued under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, fact sheets, and response to comments are available on EPA's website: http://www.epa.gov/region9/water/npdes/permits.html
