Don't miss this event: Tuesday, March 14th: When Pineapple was King

In the Upper Keys, the pineapple was considered the King of Fruit. The mix of the natural limestone substrate and thin layer of soil and leaf litter provided ideal pineapple cultivating conditions. The physical makeup of the fruit, too, benefited its standing as a substantial commercial crop. Brad Bertelli, local historian and curator of the Upper Keys’ Keys History & Discovery Center, will talk about why the pineapple was such an important crop for Upper Keys farmers, how the fruit arrived at market, and early pineapple farmers like Captain Ben Baker.

This 7 pm presentation on March 14th at the Key Largo Library Community Room (101485 Overseas Highway, Key Largo) is one of dozens of events in the second annual Outdoor Fest which is a mostly free wildlife festival that occurs from Saturday, March 11th through Saturday, March 18th, brought to you by the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuge Complex, FAVOR (Friends And Volunteers Of Refuges – Florida Keys) and the Monroe County Tourism Development Council.
