Studying the Effects of Human Hormones on Wildlife

From U.S. Geological Survey (USGS):

Drugs based on human hormones like progestin often play an important, beneficial role in our reproductive health and planning, but their effects on wildlife in the environment is less well understood.

To help shed some light on this, we did a lab study on levonorgestrel, a manmade version of progestin, and its effects on the eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). Turns out it can have significant effects, but in substantially different ways for males and females. Click here to see our results: http://bit.ly/2ayBYsA

Image shows the effects of a solution with levonorgestrel on male and female mosquitofish. Clear elongation of the fins can be seen. Image credit: Modified from Frankel and others, 2016, figures 3 and 4. #USGS #Science #Toxicology#Fish
