Northern Harrier

From USFWS National Wildlife Refuge System:

Tom Koerner of Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge in Wyoming calls northern harriers “birds of the wind.” He notes that a steady breeze keeps them aloft as they glide over cattails, grasses and sagebrush. They rely on hearing as well as vision to capture prey. If they see or hear something below, they may hover as they try to pinpoint its location. The northern harrier in the photo stopped to hover above a flock of red-winged blackbirds that were hidden in the cattails. “The black birds scattered, the harrier swooped and missed, and the hunt continued,” Tom reported.
