From Fort Scott National Historic Site, National Park Service:
While walking on the Tallgrass Prairie you may find things to see other than the Bluestem grass and flowers. For instance you may find a wide variety of insects. One example is this Praying Mantis which was spotted by a Park Ranger while photographing flowers. The Praying Mantis, named for the position of the front legs, preys on other insects and the female will often eat their mates during or after mating is finished. Usually the recipient of their slow stalking is a fly, moth, or other smaller insect. While the Mantis may move slowly toward their prey their legs move so quick to grab their prey that they often cannot be seen by the naked eye.
