Weaving Up New Uses for Cotton

In the agriculture industry, having a green thumb can help businesses improve their yield and their bottom line. As good stewards, our nation’s farmers, ranchers, and agricultural business are also committed to another type of green. Through sustainable and conservation practices, ag businesses are finding multiple uses for products, which reduces land and water usage.
The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) witnesses these efforts first-hand while overseeing industry Research and Promotion Programs. These self-help programs that are requested for and completely funded by the industry are charged with developing cutting-edge marketing campaigns and supporting nutrition research that benefits all of the industry’s members. Many of their research projects focus on sustainable practices and conservation. While we know that the list of these types of projects is endless, we would like to highlight a few of the things that the cotton industry is doing.
The multi-faceted cotton plant produces much more than just nature’s most demanded fiber. High quality cottonseed and cottonseed cooking oil is used in many popular snack foods and the plant’s residue (gin byproduct), left after ginning, is used for everything from fertilizer for your flower beds to hydromulch that encourages grass growth while preventing soil erosion. While cottonseed and cottonseed cooking oil are edible products, they are only edible after reducing gossypol levels. A compound found naturally in cotton that detests pests from eating cotton plants, gossypol is toxic for non-ruminant animals while some ruminant animals can resist it.
Since 1993, Cotton Incorporated, the marketing group used to support the Cotton Research and Promotion Program, has funded research to eliminate gossypol in cottonseed. Evolving research by Texas A&M researcher Dr. Keerti Rathore recently suggested the ability to successfully use a powerful gene-silencing mechanism developed for cancer research – Ribonucleic Acid Interference (RNAi) – to reduce the gossypol level in cottonseed while allowing it to be retained in the plant as a natural pest deterrent.
“This groundbreaking news positioned cottonseed for expansion into the food market, said Dr. Kater Hake, Vice-President of Agricultural and Environmental Research at Cotton Incorporated. “We are more than excited that this advancement holds the potential to open up new and varied food and feed markets – which should ultimately increase the value of cottonseed.”
The successful use of RNAi technology has led to a field of glandless cotton being grown in New Mexico, which will be ginned by the USDA gin lab in Las Cruces. The glandless whole cottonseed will be taken to the New Mexico State University (NMSU) where a pilot plant crushing facility is being built.

The used oil will be taken back to the experiment station where it will be converted into biodiesel and used to run the station’s irrigation pumps. This is a strong message about the industry’s commitment to sustainability,” adds Wedegaertner.
The research project will continue when the protein, which was also squeezed out during the crushing process, will be used to feed shrimp in an aquaculture experiment already underway at NMSU. “The shrimp will be harvested and sold to NMSU students who eat at the on-campus cafeteria,” explains Dr. Tracey Carrillo, Assistant Director of Campus Farms at the NMSU Ag Experiment Station. Carrillo is hoping to showcase some of the shrimp during a “Shrimp Feast” for NMSU Department Heads and other faculty.

On "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day," a Local Student Learns about Climate Change

Last week, Secretary Vilsack went to Michigan State University to deliver a major climate address.  Among those in attendance was 15 year old Ellie Hohenstein, a freshman at Annandale High School in Fairfax County, VA.  She provides this blog concerning her experiences as she accompanied her father to Lansing for the event.  Wayne Maloney, Office of Communications

My father is the Director of the USDA Climate Change Program Office in Washington, D.C. April 23 was “bring your daughter or son to work day” at USDA. I had no idea what to expect when my Dad told me I could accompany him on his business trip to Michigan. I knew I would get to watch a speech from the Secretary of Agriculture, but this was a much bigger event than I expected.
Just minutes after arriving in our hotel at nine o’clock at night, we began a walkthrough of the rooms that would be used for the event.  The next morning I got to sit in and watch as my dad and two others briefed Secretary Vilsack on the day to come.
I then tagged along for the Secretary’s big speech and saw him answer questions from reporters. I was very impressed with the way Secretary Vilsack handled questions and kept things moving while still informing everyone.
I also had the opportunity to eat lunch with three producers who are leaders in reducing carbon emissions. Bob Giacomini is a dairy farmer from California who makes cheese.  Jamie Scott is a corn and soybean farmer from Indiana.  Donn Branton is a farmer from New York that grows lots of different crops. Donn told me that the activities USDA is proposing to reduce greenhouse gases and sequester carbon are not new ideas, and have actually been around for a while. He got to where he is today through experimentation, and his neighbors are now following his example after doubting him when he first started. While talking with and listening to these producers I learned many things. I learned what a digester is, and other ways that farms and ranches can reduce their carbon output. Other beneficial practices include reduced/no tilling, and using cover crops. The farmers were very professional, interesting, and innovative.
The learning didn’t stop there.  While watching the speech and sitting in on a roundtable following the event, I learned how this announcement consisted of ten new building blocks for producers to follow if they choose to.  Participation is entirely voluntary, and producers get incentives to improve the environment. I found it odd that there was a representative from General Motors at the round table. Why would a car company be at an agricultural event?  As it turns out, General Motors is buying carbon credits from farmers for storing carbon. I thought it was cool how agriculture doesn’t just involve farmers and ranchers, it affects everyone. I knew that agriculture had a big impact, but this experience showed me just how important it is and how much affect it has on the Earth and all of us.

From Over 100,000 to 1: Partners Band Together to Beat the European Grapevine Moth

Last fall, the results of trapping for the European Grapevine Moth (Lobesia botrana or EGVM) in California were recounted during a conference call for the partners working to eradicate this invasive insect: zero, zero, zero, one moth.
We’ve gone from more than 100,000 EGVM trapped in 2010 to just one in 2014. This success makes the EGVM detection and eradication partnership one of the most effective programs for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), county departments of agriculture, University of California Cooperative Extension (UC Coop), and growers in the last decade.
We’ve come a long way, but our work isn’t finished yet. One of APHIS’ top goals is the complete eradication of EGVM from California in the next two to three years.
EGVM was first detected in Napa County, California in 2009. Subsequent surveys detected EGVM in 11 counties in the State. The detection of this pest put fruit crops worth more than $5.7 billion at risk and threatened to close valuable export markets for U.S. grapes and stonefruit around the world. In 2009, 90 percent of U.S. grape production came from California, so the finding of EGVM was especially concerning to grape growers, as well as the wine industry.

Napa Valley grape producer Ron Wicker recalled the impact the EGVM had on his crops. “In one week, our crop went from isolated clusters of rotting grapes to spreading through the entire vineyard. We lost 11 acres of chardonnay – all 60 tons of fruit.”
Greg Clark, Napa County Agricultural Commissioner said “in Napa County, wine grape production accounts for 99% of annual crop production, or over $656 million in 2013. This translates into approximately $14 billion in economic activity for the county. Napa is world renowned and we have to be good stewards of the crop, wine, and image.”
Faced with this enormous threat, we and our partners in California moved quickly. We designed an eradication program that would produce results by closely involving growers and the community. The plan called for growers to carry out pest treatments, while state and county partners set traps and lures for detection purposes and reported findings. We also relied on the excellent support of the EGVM Technical Working Group, which met regularly to provide APHIS and its partners with the best science and data to combat EGVM.

“Another key reason for success was the grower liaison role that was created early in the program,” said Nick Condos, Chief of the EGVM Quarantine Program for CDFA’s Plant Health Programs. “The grower liaisons were critical to conveying information to growers and ensuring they understood the voluntary treatments planned.”
“Growers worked closely with the liaisons and cooperated fully with both the quarantine and treatment plans,” Condos continued. “The reason WHY is because the pest was doing significant damage immediately. We were dealing with a potential game changer for how industry exports and operates.”
The quick response, sound scientific strategy, hard work by growers and industry, and the support of the community has produced fantastic results. We have eliminated EGVM from nine of 11 counties, and more than 80 percent of the acres that were quarantined have been declared free of the moth.
Now, with one moth detected in 2014, success is even closer. Some day soon, we’ll get the news that we’ve accomplished our goal: no more EGVM in California.
